RON ARTEST TALKS ABOUT THE BRAWL (2.5 YEARS LATER)

Posted by HG on May 11, 2007

Just when you think it can’t get any worse better Ron-Ron goes and drops a new video. This isn’t of the rapping, or dog neglecting ilk… Artest is talking about the infamous brawl.

Some of my favorite quotes:

  • Detroit is a gangster arena.
  • I definitely shoulda got a pass on that one… you know, when I went in the stands.
  • What Ben did was disrespectful.. If I’da known that the referees would of handled was gonna handle it how they did like as far as not handling the situation at all then I woulda probably fought.
  • The owner of Detroit, he’s a.. he’s a trip.
  • I lay on tables a lot. I lay on my bench in my neighborhood and nobody throws cups of beer and rocks at me.

Ron Artest is classic. I do agree that Ben Wallace got the ball rolling that evening, BUT.. Ron saying he deserves a pass is hilarious. What’s next? Charles Manson saying “the incident” was taken out of context?

If you’re like me.. That sucks.. But it also means you can’t get enough Ron Artest…

If Ron can keep cutting these PSAs he should get a pass on any law he breaks. I can’t have this humor locked up.

BROKEBAT MOUNTAIN

5 seconds after Roger Clemens announced that he was going to the Yankees I started receiving “Roger and Andy sittin in a bullpen” text and emails. There’s obviously no truth to the jokes…….. But this video is funny nonetheless.

I don’t think the Yankees are gonna have to worry about Roger not being around Andy the team on his off days.

LET’S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE SUCKA

Posted by HG on April 26, 2007

Loaded? check. Suns fan? check. Video camera? check. Ready to rap?

“They got their eyes on the prize and I’ll tell you whys”, “Coming froma coming from Brazil like Barbosa, he’ll blow by you and then he’ll toast you, in the toaster”, and “they got goat boy, go back to Germany, go back to Berlin” are some of my favorite lyrics of all time. Tell me one MC he wouldn’t smash in a battle..

Kobe Bryant took exception to the “they’ll close line you like Raja Bell” line and demanded that I show this video:

That video’s from back in the day.. Way back when Kobe wore number 8.. After seeing Otto flex his bilingual skills and playing the obligatory “rappin’ in a wifebeater” card, I don’t know why his album didn’t take off. He even got Tyra Banks on the track.. She only danced on stage because nothing says professional model and television host like backin your thang up at NBA All-Star weekend. I can’t wait to see Barbara Walters dancing for Ron Artest next year.

If you can’t quite make out what Kobe’s sayin, they claim to have the lyrics here.

IT’S ON NOW

 jason-whitlock-bunnies.jpg

**HG’s note: I wasn’t planning to talk about Whitlock unless he did something or said something new. I found the song I had written about earlier so I had to drop this.**

When I found out that Jason Whitlock was working with “gangsta rappers” I labled him a hypocrite. He helped produce a Kansas City Chiefs theme song that’s performed by the type of people Jason says are ruining the black community. I talked about that here.

Now you can listen to the song. The lyrics aren’t overly gangsta, but if I was writing a Whitlockesque Hip Hop critique I could find fault with the language. I wasn’t expecting anything too hardcore since it’s for the Chiefs, and it’s dedicated to Derrick Thomas.

My only issue with any of this is that Whitlock has been so adamant about his disdain for Hip Hop yet he’s working with the 57th Street Rogue Dog Villians. Something tells me their cd is a little different from a Mos Def or Common cd. It was probably their MySpace page (where Whitlock is listed as a friend) that tipped me off.

I’m all for people being succesful. I’m not mad at Jason for being all over tv garnering national attention. I’m mad that he’s trying to put down Hip Hop in order to raise up his career. He must have forgotten about this:

When Jason Whitlock, a sportswriter for the Kansas City Star and sometimes sports reporter on ESPN commissioned 5150 to produce all the music for his radio show the opportunity allowed 5150 to reach a larger more mainstream audience and aided in its being recognized as a legitimate fixture in the rap hip/hop production industry..so much so that the team at 5150 was asked to create fight songs for the Kansas City Royals baseball team and the University of Missouri’s basketball team.

Whitlock, my brotha, just tell us what it is. Are you still rolling with the Villians? Do you condone their use of the “N” word? Do you use the “N” word when you’re hangin with them? Did you tell Oprah you’re an aspiring Hip Hop producer?

DOCTOR J

Posted by HG on April 15, 2007

whitlock-rapping.jpg

Jason does not despise Hip Hop, he said so himself  “I don’t hate hip hop. I hate what it has become. I hate what it has done to the minds and values of young people.”  See.. So that leaves the door open for him to start a career as a Hip Hop producer. The website  www.chapmanrecording.com states:

Some of the biggest names in KC rap gathered recently to record a new game day song for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Track, “It’s On Now ’07”, was created by Seven and produced by KC Star sports writer Jason Whitlock with the assistance of Strange Music headman Travis O’Guin.”

I’m assuming since J-Dub made the following comments about Hip Hop,

Prison culture swallowed hip-hop culture, turning party music into a celebration of violence, hostility, disrespect and drug-dealing. Prison culture created the Black KKK and negated much of the progress won by the civil-rights movement.

Prison culture is winning. It has corrupted a form of music that once gave us great joy and/or offered inspiration. Prison culture — with its BET and MTV videos, popular movies, acceptance in the mainstream media and false gods — Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg — has perverted the American dream for black youth.

Hip-hop/prison culture must be destroyed and remade. In its present, N-word-reliant, violence-promoting form, nothing good can come from hip hop.

he wouldn’t have any rapper that could be considered a “hip hop hoodlum” on a track that he’s producing. Right?!? Let’s take a look..

Rich The Factor, author of such classics as Bitch, Drug Team, and Pull Dope out.

Tech N9ne, the same Tech N9ne that Whitlock shouted out to lead off this column, has penned Civil Rights anthems My Wife, My Bitch, My GirlReal Killer…and Trapped In A Psycho’s Body.

I couldn’t find too much more information about the other guys on the track but I think this line from Tech N9ne’s hymn, Absolute Power, says it best..

we Kansas City players
and we bout sold game,
we make it so that Tech N9ne is a household name
How many points you got? I got 50
here’s a question to the censorship committee
who’s the biggest gangs of niggas in the city,
my villains are Gritty,
Big Scoob, Txx Will, Bakarii,
rest in peace Short Nitty

Yep..These are his readers.

Don’t get me wrong..I love Hip Hop..I need Hip Hop as much as I need sports. I’m not trying to bash the rappers for their lyrics. I’m not trying to blame rappers for every problem plaguing the black community… But Doctor J is.. I wonder if the suits at Disney told Ja-Lock that he could have his old job back, but first he REALLY has to prove that he won’t step out of line again.

DON IMUS TAKING RACISM TO OUTER SPACE?

Posted by HG on April 12, 2007

don-imus-1.jpgIs it time for Don Imus to pack his bags and make the move to satellite?I can hardly think of a better time for him to go ahead and join the likes of Opie & Anthony and Howard Stern on the big broadcast in the sky. Opie & Anthony’s move was pretty much forced after they were kicked off the air. Imus could be following suit since MSNBC will no longer simulcast his show, and sponsors are saying peace out homie. I think Imus should be fired, but will it even matter if he can go make the same racist comments he’s been making for years in a new forum?

The biggest issue to arise from the Imus fiasco is why can (black) rappers and (black)comedians say “hoe” but everybody’s mad at Don Imus for saying it?.. I gotta be honest. When I first heard the comments, I was more offended by the “nappy headed” portion of the statement than I was the hoes part. I don’t agree with calling women bitches and hoes, but the racist part of his comments burned a little more than the misogynistic parts. I’m not trying to be a sexist but if Don Imus said I was at the mall and I saw some hoes I don’t think many people would say anything. If Don Imus said I was at the mall and saw that nappy headed coach Tony Dungy there would be more outrage.  I think most people that are taking offense to Imus’ comments are doing so because he clearly identified the Rutgers Women’s basketball team as the target of his blast. It’s strange to me that nobody is really calling out Imus producer Bernard McGuirk for his comment. He was the first person to refer to the Rutgers women as hoes on the air.

Although I’m against everything Don Imus and company said I think we need to be careful with our political correctness. We’re gonna end up having free speech laws equivalent to the Patriot Act. If we start blaming rappers for Imus’ comments, and movies for violence in society, where will we stop? Is there no responsibility placed on the individual? I’ve listened to Hip Hop since 1982. I haven’t killed one person. Saving Private Ryan is one of my favorite movies yet, I’ve never gone to France to track down a missing soldier. When the shootings took place at Columbine people wanted to execute ban Marilyn Manson. Again, that’s a case of misplaced reactions which Marilyn himself talked about here.

When the double standard card is played I find myself flip flopping on the issue. I don’t think I’m appropriately equipped (mentally) to express all of my views on the subject so I will defer for the moment. Noted author and a dude that’s way smarter than me, Michael Eric Dyson, gives his views on the “N” word controversy in the video below.

I once worked at a local sports radio station with a person I would call a racist. This person is still on the air. Two of the more memorable examples of his idiocy are 1) The time he told me he believes it’s a scientific fact that whites are smarter than blacks, and 2) The time he asked me “why can you guys say nigger to each other but blacks get mad if I say nigger to them?” Being a professional, I had never uttered the word nigger or nigga in this man’s presence. I just looked at him for a second, then I asked him “who do you want to call a nigger and get away with it?” I’ve never quite understood why non-blacks get upset that blacks say nigga to one another but blacks don’t want non-blacks to call them that. I know we have equality in our country but why would a non-black want to say the word? I have no idea.

Jason Whitlock and others in the black community are placing the blame on the rappers as well. People are calling out Jesse and Al for going after Don Imus, and not saying a word to the rappers. These people are misinformed. Jesse Jackson wants to ban the use of the word nigger/nigga and Sharpton was clearly against the negative aspect of rap music when he started his “movement”. And since everyone wants to be fair and correct, is it fair and correct to lump ALL of rap music into one mysoginistic, violent, and ignorant group? Of course not. But again, the people “hatin on the culture” are misinformed. It’s gonna be interesting to see the reaction of the Universal Music Group  (home to Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, and others), which is a subsidary of Vivendi SA, which also houses NBC/Universal, who just dropped Imus.

I never imagined myself spending this much time talking about Don Imus or women’s basketball. Well, Don Imus really because I’m not talking about women’s basketball, just a situation in which one team is involved. Anyways..I’m starting to ramble so I think it’s time for me to hit the dusty trail, but if you haven’t had enough of this mess follow the links.
