WHEN DUTY CALLS

Posted by HG on July 13, 2007

Sorry for the lack of posts. I been caught up in the world, some business, some pleasure, but I still should’ve done a better job of keeping up. I let a number of things slip by that I wanted to talk about, and I had some videos for y’all to check out. I don’t wanna make any excuses cause like I said, some of it’s been pleasure, so I been slackin.

If I had been on my game I woulda had a post about the All-Star game. I woulda mentioned how the only thing missing from the 4 hour pre-game show was Willie Mays’ son threatening to turn his pops into a fudgesicle. I thought the game was all right, and in the 9th inning when LaRussa didn’t put Pujols in, I knew where Tony was coming from. Just a few weeks ago when the Angels played the Cardinals, Rodriguez had Pujols looking silly. And I’m a Cards fan.

This clip was in honor of Ichiro winning the MVP.

I’m still trying to figure out why Ichiro needed an interpreter for the post game interview.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE FUNNY, GEORGE STEINBRENNER

Posted by HG on July 10, 2007

A so so takeoff on the Seinfeld Steinbrenner. If Ace would have hit The Boss with the bat, then they mighta been on to something. If nothing else, the video gives me a chance to talk about Time magazine’s Ten Most Notorious Presidential Pardons.

The list was made before Scooter Libby got a pass, in anticipation of Bush looking out for his boy. To my surprise, George Steinbrenner came in at #7. I had no idea George was rollin like that.

Indicted on 14 criminal counts on April 5, 1974, the owner of the New York Yankees plead guilty to obstruction of justice and conspiring to make illegal contributions to President Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign.

Steinbrenner got let off the hook by Ronald Reagan in ’89, proving that he really is a Boss. Ah, 1989.. One year after the Yankees traded Jay Buhner.

THROWIN’ HEAT

Posted by HG on June 30, 2007

Who hears “flaming baseballs, a grassy field, trees, and a house” and says “I’m in”?.. Me, that’s who. You’re lying if you say you don’t wanna send one ball blazing through the sky. And wouldn’t this be a good idea for MLB, at least for the Home Run Derby? It’s more visually attractive, and the fans get to find out who really wants the Ryan Howard hr.

If you decide to play at home, please remember to stop, drop, and roll before you rush the mound.

GUYS AND DOLLS

Posted by HG on June 28, 2007

Ahh the Cabbage Patch Kids.. I remember my sister whined for one and when she got it, she lost the damn thing. When I look back, it’s possible that she sold it since people were goin’ apeshit over those dolls.

No matter how popular CPK got, I don’t remember any point when it was cool for little boys to want them.. And then take them to a baseball game. The fathers in those commercials have to be so ashamed of their sons. Dad wants to get out to the yard, teach his son how to score a game, and if they’re lucky, they’ll catch a foul ball. Son wants to stay home and he’ll only leave the house if he can bring Barbi and her corvette.

THANK YOU JACKIE ROBINSON

Posted by HG on June 22, 2007

There are not enough keys on the board for me to type about the contributions Jackie Robinson made not only to baseball, but to the United States. Jackie was a braver and better man than I could ever claim to be, and I would like to see him get more recognition.

Speaking of recognition.. There was no mention of Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, or Barry Bonds in the video. How does Willie Mays not get a shout out? I gotta assume Barry didn’t get one because they didn’t want to attach any controversy to such a worthy cause. I’m glad everybody’s thanking Jackie, but keep in mind, he’s the guy responsible for Elijah Dukes too.

BARRY BONDS, JASON GIAMBI, AND CONSPIRACIES

Posted by HG on June 19, 2007

bonds-and-giambi.jpg

Now that Jason Giambi has kinda sorta given in to MLB’s threats of “speak or else” it’s time to see if baseball will cave to some tough talk. Barry Bonds’ attorney Michael Rains is claiming to have information that “raises questions about the government’s investigation of the baseball star”, and he will go public unless the gov’t backs off of his client.

Michael Rains says he submitted letters on 3 different occassions to interim U.S. Attorney Scott Schools. Attorney Schools has taken over for former U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan who was one of the 8 U.S. Attorneys fired by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. Regardless of who is in charge, Michael Rains has some things to get off of his chest:

“The public has the right to know of the information I have given to Mr. Schools. And it has a right to know how the government has conducted itself here and I hope the government will engage in some dialogue with the media and the public to discuss this.”

The thing that bothers me is Rains seems to be saying he’ll only play the “secret info” card if Bonds is indicted. That’s lame. Mr. Rains, show us what you got.. Bring it out, tell ’em why you mad, SPILL THE BEANS.

Has the government been trying to frame Barry Bonds? Have they tried to persuade witnesses? I wanna know the deal. Do the letters have something to do with Kevin Ryan being fired as a U.S. Attorney and lead prosecutor in the BALCO case? Tell us. It’s no secret that Ryan’s handling of the BALCO case was often criticized, by Bonds’ supporters and Kevin Ryan’s fellow prosecutors.

Last July, Ryan also decided not to seek an indictment of Bonds for perjury, choosing instead to transfer the case to a new grand jury for more investigation. Ryan had hoped to pressure Greg Anderson, Bonds’ trainer and a BALCO defendant, to testify against Bonds. But the trainer refused and has been imprisoned for contempt of court since before Thanksgiving.

The strategy was contested by some of Ryan’s own prosecutors, who believed they had enough evidence to indict Bonds without Anderson’s testimony, according to sources familiar with the case. Officials from the Internal Revenue Service and FBI unsuccessfully lobbied the Justice Department for an indictment, The Chronicle has reported.

When asked if his dealings with the BALCO case were the reason for him getting the boot, Ryan replied:

“It’s a complicated issue. I had almost exclusive control of this case for most of its history. In the latter stages, there seemed some interest coming out of D.C. that wasn’t present at the beginning.”

To be honest I have no idea where Michael Rains is going with his threat to the Roid Rangers. I don’t know whether he has an info bomb to drop, or if he’s just trying to justify being on Barry’s payroll. What I do know is that all of these passive aggressive threats lack balls. If you got the goods, give ’em up. If not, shut up.

DAVID ORTIZ: THE OPPOSITE OF DAUNTE CULPEPPER

Posted by HG on June 15, 2007

Athletes are usually in the position of having their ice taken, or mistakenly giving it away and asking for it back rather than taking people’s pieces. David Ortiz is trying to change things up little.

I need somebody to translate this video for me. I remember hearing a track or something with Big Papi and Mclaen but I don’t know what happened to it and it was in Spanish so I don’t know what it was saying. Don’t let me find out David Ortiz is the Lastings Milledge of Reggaeton.

THE ’92 A.L. ALL-STARS USED SUPER POWERS

Posted by HG on June 15, 2007

I don’t know what to say about the video itself.. It’s kinda funny, but it’s too fake for me. Everybody knows that MLB banned “super powers” in 1991 so that makes it impossible that Kirby Puckett could have been shooting lasers out of his eyes in the 1992 Midsummer Classic. I don’t know what “Jose Canseco shoots gays from his body” means and I don’t wanna know.

The actual 1992 All-Star game was an American League massacre. Kevin Brown was the winner, Tom Glavine the loser, in a 13-6 pounding by the A.L. Things were so bad for the National League that Tony Gwynn went 0-2 in front of his home crowd in San Diego. Ken Griffey Jr., Mark McGwire, Roberto Kelly, and Rueben Sierra all drove in 2 runs for the A.L. All-Stars. It’s a trip to look back over these rosters. Shout out to my man Tom Pagnozzi!!

I didn’t think their could be a video worse than this but I was wrong.

THE BIG THREE

MLB

Bud Selig wants Jason Giambi to talk to the MLB steroid busters “or else”. Or else what Bud? You’re gonna suspend Jason Giambi for talking about something that happened in the past, that he already kinda admitted to, for what? I’m not even sure where this steroid scandal investigation is going. If every player that ever used steroids came forward today and admitted it, then what? Nobody is gonna shutdown MLB.. And MLB officials might not have been doing the roids, but they were well aware of what was going on. The new rules are in place, so it’s time to focus on current steroid users, the dummies that slip up now. Threatening punishment for Giambi is lip service that really serves no purpose. Let’s look forward instead of living in the past.

NBA

Baseball is known as the “numbers” sport but Jason over at Ball Hype has picked up where Bill Simmons and John Hollinger left off for basketball statistical analysis. Breaking down who was the best player for every ten year period of the league from ’51-’61 to ’97-’07 was a great idea and produced some interesting results. The rankings are based on Hollinger’s PER formula and most of the names you would expect to see there are there. If you take a look at the total number of ten year spans dominated by MJ, only centers Chamberlain, Jabbar, and O’neal are in his class. Guys like Olajuwon, Malone, and Garnett have the misfortune of playing in eras dominated by bigger stars.

NFL

Pacman Jones’ ill-fated trip and “rain making” at a strip club during the NBA All-Star weekend was one of the reasons he ended up being suspended for the season by new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Yesterday the news broke that Jones’ DNA tested negative, twice, when compared to DNA obtained from a stripper that was bitten during the February fracas. So the DNA doesn’t match and you have Lt. George Castro saying that the police still have not connected what happened inside the club to the shooting that took place outside of the club. If Adam Jones is cleared of everything except for being a 81k idiot, will/should the NFL reduce his suspension?

THE CLEVELAND INDIANS HIT THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CYCLE

Posted by HG on June 8, 2007

While congress is looking for the real steroid users, and the media wants to know who A-Rod is banging, the Cleveland Indians have stepped to the plate against domestic violence. Manager Eric Wedge and players C.C. Sabathia, Trot Nixon, Mike Rouse, Aaron Fultz, Jason Michaels, and Jeremy Sowers along with Kate Wedge and other wives have teamed up with the V-Day campaign to stop abuse against women and girls. The V-Day campaign’s mission is to increase awareness and raise money for anti-violence organizations.

Domestic violence is an issue that’s bigger than ‘roids, managers going ape shit, and how many black players are in MLB. Check out these statistics..1 in 3 women are beaten or raped in the world today. 1 in 6 women suffer the same fate in the United States.. Why doesn’t this get the same attention as a Don Imus or dogfighting?

It seems like every week we hear a story about a person of note, a man with some celebrity being accused of domestic violence. I know not every charge is true, but we’re only hearing the accusations against famous people. Imagine how many cases we don’t hear about.. 1 in 6 women in the United States?!? That’s disgusting. I’m glad the Indians are doing their part to stop this crime.
