THANK YOU JACKIE ROBINSON

Posted by HG on June 22, 2007

There are not enough keys on the board for me to type about the contributions Jackie Robinson made not only to baseball, but to the United States. Jackie was a braver and better man than I could ever claim to be, and I would like to see him get more recognition.

Speaking of recognition.. There was no mention of Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, or Barry Bonds in the video. How does Willie Mays not get a shout out? I gotta assume Barry didn’t get one because they didn’t want to attach any controversy to such a worthy cause. I’m glad everybody’s thanking Jackie, but keep in mind, he’s the guy responsible for Elijah Dukes too.

BARRY BONDS, JASON GIAMBI, AND CONSPIRACIES

Posted by HG on June 19, 2007

bonds-and-giambi.jpg

Now that Jason Giambi has kinda sorta given in to MLB’s threats of “speak or else” it’s time to see if baseball will cave to some tough talk. Barry Bonds’ attorney Michael Rains is claiming to have information that “raises questions about the government’s investigation of the baseball star”, and he will go public unless the gov’t backs off of his client.

Michael Rains says he submitted letters on 3 different occassions to interim U.S. Attorney Scott Schools. Attorney Schools has taken over for former U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan who was one of the 8 U.S. Attorneys fired by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. Regardless of who is in charge, Michael Rains has some things to get off of his chest:

“The public has the right to know of the information I have given to Mr. Schools. And it has a right to know how the government has conducted itself here and I hope the government will engage in some dialogue with the media and the public to discuss this.”

The thing that bothers me is Rains seems to be saying he’ll only play the “secret info” card if Bonds is indicted. That’s lame. Mr. Rains, show us what you got.. Bring it out, tell ’em why you mad, SPILL THE BEANS.

Has the government been trying to frame Barry Bonds? Have they tried to persuade witnesses? I wanna know the deal. Do the letters have something to do with Kevin Ryan being fired as a U.S. Attorney and lead prosecutor in the BALCO case? Tell us. It’s no secret that Ryan’s handling of the BALCO case was often criticized, by Bonds’ supporters and Kevin Ryan’s fellow prosecutors.

Last July, Ryan also decided not to seek an indictment of Bonds for perjury, choosing instead to transfer the case to a new grand jury for more investigation. Ryan had hoped to pressure Greg Anderson, Bonds’ trainer and a BALCO defendant, to testify against Bonds. But the trainer refused and has been imprisoned for contempt of court since before Thanksgiving.

The strategy was contested by some of Ryan’s own prosecutors, who believed they had enough evidence to indict Bonds without Anderson’s testimony, according to sources familiar with the case. Officials from the Internal Revenue Service and FBI unsuccessfully lobbied the Justice Department for an indictment, The Chronicle has reported.

When asked if his dealings with the BALCO case were the reason for him getting the boot, Ryan replied:

“It’s a complicated issue. I had almost exclusive control of this case for most of its history. In the latter stages, there seemed some interest coming out of D.C. that wasn’t present at the beginning.”

To be honest I have no idea where Michael Rains is going with his threat to the Roid Rangers. I don’t know whether he has an info bomb to drop, or if he’s just trying to justify being on Barry’s payroll. What I do know is that all of these passive aggressive threats lack balls. If you got the goods, give ’em up. If not, shut up.

BARRY BONDS NOT ALWAYS A DOUCHEBAG

Posted by HG on June 1, 2007

The media has clearly been approaching Barry the wrong way.. They gotta act like they just discovered baseball a few hours before speaking with him.. “Now what’s been goin’ on with you these days?”.. Seriously? Unless this lady has been in a coma or under a hair dryer for the past 7-10 years there is no way in the world she doesn’t know what’s going on with Barry.. It looks like the only way George Mitchell is gonna have a conversation with Bonds is to show up on the red carpet of Eddie Murphy’s next movie.

LARRY WALKER: STEROIDS ARE BEYOND CHEATING

Posted by HG on May 9, 2007

Larry Walker is/was one of my favorite baseball players. He was a 5 tool guy, he won anlarry-walker.jpeg MVP, he was Canadian and played for the Montreal Expos (that’s like Tony LaRussa managing at Busch stadium), plus he threw right-handed and hit left-handed which I always think is cool. Larry was probably more known for his offense (3 time NL batting champ), but he played the outfield like a master (7 gold gloves) and had an arm that baserunners didn’t want to test. L-Dub learned this week that he’ll be inducted into the Canadian Sport’s Hall of Fame in October. The issue of steroids came up during a conference call with Walker:

“I’m living proof that I didn’t take them because when I retired I put on 15 pounds – I didn’t shrink. An old saying in baseball says ‘If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying’ – pitchers with pine tar and runners on second giving signs, but sticking a needle in you is stepping over the boundary of the sport and what you’re supposed to do.”

Walker also said there should be an asterisk placed next to the name of any person caught using steroids. When asked about Barry Bonds he said it was sad to see Barry chasing the record “and only 30 to 40 percent of people care”.

POLL: RACIAL POLLS ARE DUMB

Posted by HG on May 7, 2007

diddy-voting.jpg

The new media flavor of the week is the “race based” poll or study. Just last week the traditional and non-traditional media were buzzing over alleged racial bias amongst NBA referees and now this:

  • More than half of baseball fans are rooting against Barry Bonds as he tries to break Hank Aaron’s major league home run record of 755, according to an ESPN/ABC News poll.
  • The survey found that 52 percent of fans hope Bonds doesn’t break the record, while 37 percent of fans want him to surpass Aaron’s mark, set in 1974.
  • In addition, 73 percent of fans think Bonds used steroids, despite Bonds’ repeated denials. Bonds has never tested positive for steroids.
  • However, race plays a unique role. Black fans in the survey are more than twice as likely to want Bonds to break Aaron’s record (74 percent to 28 percent), and 37 percent of black fans think Bonds used steroids, compared to 76 percent of white fans.

There are parts of the polls that I agree with and then some parts that I don’t understand. The first thing I want to know is why do these polls interview a couple of hundred people and then tell us “this is what Americans think”? Every black person I know thinks Bonds used some sort of performance enhancer. I definitely think he used something. One of my partnas is a huge SF Giants fan and he’s black, and he’ll tell you that Barry used something. As more and more news comes out about the steroid era, it looks like damn near everybody used a PED of some sort.

I could waste the next hour of your time going into what I view as hypocrisy and bias towards Barry Bonds, but I want to question the media’s motivation behind running these stories.. Is this 1907 or 2007? Is our country a melting pot or a race war waiting to happen?

Whenever I see one of these “black people think ___” polls I always ask my brothas “did any of you get to vote on this?” and the answer is always no. I don’t know one person that has ever been polled for these purposes.. Do you? And why are we always breaking things down along black and white lines? There’s no brown and yellow people with opinions? Does the future of our country hinge on what blacks and whites think about different subjects? All of this crap is stupid.

The only thing these polls prove is that our race relations in this country are in a bad state. It’s just like when it’s election time. You always hear “so and so is going after the black vote” or “candidate x needs to secure the Latino vote”. If we’re all Americans, shouldn’t it just be the democrat or republican vote?

These polls present more problems than they solve and the conducters of the surveys should be ashamed of themselves. I mean, take the Bonds poll for instance.. Blacks care whether black man A has the homerun record over black man B? If things are really racially based wouldn’t blacks be content either way? But, you can sell more newspapersget more hits on a website if you run out a racially divisive poll. I can’t wait until next week so I can find out how Native Americans feel about the NBA age limit.
